ABORIGINAL WORK EXPERIENCE PILOT PROGRAM

The Opportunity

Lindsay Construction is interested in providing 6 individuals from the Nova Scotia Aboriginal community (2 Labourers, 4 Carpenters) with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the ICI construction industry. As one of largest employers of carpenters and labourers in the Atlantic region, Lindsay Construction undertakes a broad range of construction projects including hotels, hospitals, schools, retail and commercial spaces, etc. that in turn helps employees to develop diverse and in-depth trade related knowledge. The program is expected to begin in early 2017.

Duration of Placement:

8 week paid work placement

Location:

Worksites in the Halifax Regional Municipality

Wage:

Current collective agreement rate for trade in question (determined by level of experience on entry, when placement begins, etc.)

Skills and Training Required:

Below is a brief list by trade of the skills and training relevant to the positions available. Caseworkers however are encouraged to help candidates identify any other certifications, training or construction related experience (both formal and informal) they have as it may prove to have transferrable skill value.

For candidates wishing to pursue the opportunity, but lacking a specified skill, case workers are encouraged to explore available training options and to discuss with Lindsay Construction.

Carpenter:

This opportunity is ideal for those who have some carpentry experience; however, new entrants to the trade will be considered.

Required before starting on-site:

  • WHMiS
  • Safety Orientation
  • Fall Protection
  • Aerial Lift

Preferred but not essential before starting on-site:

  • Scaffolding
  • Knowledge of Tilt-Up
  • Knowledge of Concrete Forming

Labourer:

Labourers assist other tradespersons on the job site. This opportunity is ideal for those who work well with others, are mechanically inclined and physically able to do a variety of tasks that involve lifting, bending, etc. Previous job site experience is preferred; however, new entrants will be considered.

Required before starting on-site:

  • WHMiS
  • Safety Orientation

Preferred but not essential before starting on-site:

  • Fall Protection
  • Fork Lift
  • Aerial Lift

Additional Pre-Requisites for all Applicants

Applicants interested in this opportunity should also have the following:

  • Reliable method of transportation to and from the job site and/or training facility
  • Willingness to join the union representing their chosen trade
  • Personal Protective Equipment (to be specified)

Students

Lindsay Construction actively participates and partners with various schools, colleges, and universities, seeking students for work term placements. Although we take students in many departments, in the past we have had great success with students from University Engineering Programs (e.g., Civil) as well as community college (e.g., Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management Technology, and Certified Architectural Technologist. We complete our summer hiring early; therefore, students interested in completing summer work terms should apply in the January or February timeframe. Lindsay Construction Specializes in:

Project Management: Plans, coordinates, and controls projects from beginning to end.

On-Site Operations: Performs the physical work required to produce the company’s products (building and infrastructure construction, roofing, cladding, millwork, sheet metal, etc.)

Estimating: Prepares estimates of labour, material, and subcontractor costs.

Engineering & CAD: Establishes and evaluates structural and architectural components of buildings and produces drawings for construction.

Business Development: Promotes the company and drives sales of products and services.

OHS & Quality: Establishes, maintains, and monitors workplace health, safety, and quality systems.

Finance and Accounting: Assists leadership in making business decisions, and provides ongoing accounting and administrative support.

Information Technology: Facilitates information technology systems development, management, and support.
